Hinrich Mercker

Hinrich Mercker lives in Berlin. He works as a business coach, international facilitator and consultant on leadership development with multi-disciplinary teams and organizations across all sectors. His work is deeply inspired by Viktor E. Frankl, Thich Nhat Hanh and Otto Scharmer’s Theory U.

Hinrich was director of GIZ’s Development Policy Forum (Dialogue, Event Design and Event Management) in Berlin. He is alumni of MIT’s Community Innovators Lab (CoLab) and participated in 2006/2007 in the programme Emerging Leaders Innovate Across Sectors (ELIAS), which has been initiated by Otto Scharmer and Peter Senge at MIT. Since 2006 he is designing and implementing leadership journeys and workshops on organisational change, self-management, communication and mindfulness applying the framework of Theory U.

2005 and 2006 he advised the Independent Evaluation Group of the World Bank on the evaluation “Using Training to Build Capacity for Development”.

Hinrich lectured at the Otto-Suhr-Institute for Political Science, part of Berlin’s Free University as well as at the University of Potsdam’s Department of Economics and Social Sciences. Prior to that, Hinrich worked for the German Foundation for International Development (DSE), where he headed the Public Administration Promotion Center. His focus at DSE included environmental administration, climate change, local government and diplomatic services. He hosted advanced multi-stakeholder dialogue programmes and labs for executives from Asia, Africa and Central Asia, including a multi-year programme with the Vietnamese Environmental Ministry in Hanoi and the Climate Leadership Programme (CLP) with executives from Indonesia and South Africa.

In 1988 Hinrich earned a university degree in Protestant Theology from Georg-August-University in Göttingen (Germany), and he also studied at Serampore College in West Bengal (India). In 1990 Hinrich completed the postgraduate programme at the German Development Institute (DIE/GDI).
