Methodist Sustainable Program

Key learnings:
- When you create the field things happen, just trust.
- The extent to which not being in control can bring better results and really creating a learning community.
- Creating real connections goes beyond words and physical evidences.
- When you are connected with the future that wants to emerge your actions flow in high speed and spreads like a wave beyond any expectations, and everyone involved feels this huge force and urgency.
Key questions:
- How can we mainstream sustainability transversally within current curricula and create ways to address the transformations that the future needs in every professional field of the university?
- How can we create a movement towards the society as a whole including companies and communities and continue to increase this learning community?
- How can we reconnect to the ecosystems from where we live and offer developmental alternatives that consider this nature heritage and open space for its expression and conservation, enhancing the uniqueness and universality of each one of us?
Key Stakeholders:
The university as a whole including the management staff, the professors, educational centers, courses, and students; communities that surrounds the university; city halls; companies; and other universities and schools.
The program is already recognized by stakeholders and won two national prizes. The methodology we used is being shared in congress, meetings, and papers and there have been some visitors to our university in order to learn about the program. We already reached in different degrees of involvement a third of our professors (totaling 218) and half of the management staff (28 managers). In the upcoming years we want to: expand the program to all professors in the university and all administrative employees; decrease our ecological footprint focusing in water, energy greenhouse gas emissions and waste; improve our campaigns and communication in order to inspire other universities and educational institutions; a vigorous and innovative learning community; implementing new courses as our environmental engineering focused in biomimicry and offer new ideas, technologies and knowledge sustainable inspired to society; our students obtain recognition by society and develop as different professionals; influence and work together with companies, creating edge educational experiences.

The design of the program involved collective co-creation and participative learning through mind, heart and hands. This initiative gave birth to a learning community and to projects that are transforming the university, creating new courses and impacting the university surroundings.
